How to get a Marriage License
Step-by-Step Oahu Marriage License Checklist
- Verify Your Eligibility and Documents: Both partners must be at least 18 years old and provide a valid government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license or passport. If 18 or younger, a copy of the birth certificate will be needed. If either party was divorced or widowed within the last 30 days, you must bring a certified copy of the divorce decree or death certificate to your appointment.
- Submit the Online Application: Visit the State of Hawaii’s official portal to complete the electronic application. You will be required to pay a non-refundable $65 fee via credit card. Once your payment is processed, the system will email you a receiopt and an 8-digit Locator ID (also called an Authorization Code). Print or save this number. You will be asked for this code when picking up the license from a marriage agent.
Meet with a marriage agent: Both partners must appear together before a registered marriage license agent to verify their identities. For your convenience, our in house agent is able to issue a license to you at our Honolulu office. Your marriage license is issued once your in-person appointment is complete. It is valid immediately upon issuance, but it expires exactly 30 days later. Your wedding ceremony must take place within this 30-day window, or the license becomes null and void, requiring you to restart the application and pay the fee again.
Ceremony: Bring the physical license to your ceremony. After the wedding, Rev. James will electronically file the documents with the State to register your marriage officially. Tip: If you happen to forget your license or loose it, don’t panic. Rev. James can still look up your information provided I have your date of birth and last names.
